My Favorite Things

Over the years, I have spent a lot of time and money weeding through all of the natural products the marketplace is flooded with in order to transition to a non-toxic lifestyle. At first it was overwhelming, but I took it slow and switched out one product at a time. By doing this, I was really able to find things that I truly love and now I can share them with you! I do not list anything that I do not personally use and love. Some links on this site are affiliate links so I will receive a small commission if you purchase through these links, but it doesn’t change the price for you.

Kitchen
Water Filter

  • The Big Berkey – A counter top gravity-fed filter that removes harmful viruses, bacteria, and chemicals but keeps the healthy minerals. We also use the white fluoride filters.

Small Appliances

  • Ninja Cooking System – This is my primary slow cooker, but it also can act as a stove top or oven! It’s very handy and so easy to clean.
  • Instant Pot – This combines 7 kitchen appliances into 1: pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, saute, yogurt maker and warmer. My favorite thing to make in the Instant Pot is rice, it turns out so yummy!
  • Blendtec Designer Series Blender – This is a commercial quality blender that pulverizes anything. And I mean it, I call it my power tool of the kitchen!
  • KitchenAid Mixer – I may not use this as often as my other small appliances, but I am so thankful to have it when I need it.

Cookware

  • Le Creuset 5 Quart Braiser – This is our primary item in the kitchen that we use every single day to cook just about everything. The enamel cast iron finish is a healthy alternative to non-stick Teflon, which emits dangerous chemicals into your food when cooking at high temperatures. This item should last our lifetime and hopefully can be handed down to our children, so it was most definitely worth the investment.
  • All Clad 12” Fry Pan – It’s not until you begin using quality cookware until you really know what you’ve been missing. This 5-ply bonded fry pan with stainless steel, aluminum, and a thick copper core for even heating was completely worth the investment.
  • The Lodge 12” Cast Iron Skillet – Sometimes you just need a good ole’ cast-iron skillet, and I love this one because it’s made in the US.
  • Wusthof 7 Piece Knife Block Set – I cooked for so many years with cheap knives, and I decided it was time to make this investment since I spend so much time in the kitchen. And I never looked back! These knives are amazing.
For the Home
Air Purifyer

  • Moso Natural Air Purifying Bags – These are an easy and convenient way to purify the air inside our home. They’re free of fragrance and toxins and the natural bamboo charcoal effectively absorbs and removes odors, allergens and harmful pollutants.

Bedroom

  • Philips Wake-Up Light – This alarm clock wakes you up gently by simulating the sunrise and plays gentle nature sounds. It’s amazing how much easier it is to get out of bed when you wake up gently to the soft light and bird sounds rather than to an obnoxious alarm clock. This also simulates the sunset, has an FM radio option as well as 2 alarm clock settings.

Bathroom

  • Rainshow’r Dechlorinating Shower Filter – Having a filter on our shower is super important and we make sure to replace ours every 9-12 months for our household of 2. Steam contains up to 50 times more chemicals than liquid water since chlorine byproducts vaporize much more quickly and at a lower temperature than water. Inhaling these chemicals is much more dangerous than drinking water since it goes directly into our blood stream, whereas ingested water (and the chemicals it contains) is partially filtered out by our kidneys and digestive system.

Laundry

  • NaturOli Soap Nuts – Soap Nuts are dried shells of the soapberry fruit containing saponin, a highly effective cleaning agent. Saponin works like most detergents & soaps with no chemicals. Now if you’re looking for lots of suds or removing deep stains, these won’t be for you but they have worked sufficiently for me for most laundry loads. Plus they last a long time and are very inexpensive.
  • Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder – Jon isn’t crazy about the soap nuts (I think because he has more stains and they don’t work well on stains), so he uses this concentrated laundry powder that is free of harsh chemicals. I haven’t heard any complaints!
  • Little Likes Wool Dryer Balls – We use these as a replacement for dryer sheets and liquid fabric softeners. Conventional dryer sheets and fabric softeners are loaded with toxins that interfere with our endocrine system, but these dryer balls are made with organic wool with no chemicals and they work just as well, if not better. Put a drop of essential oils on the balls if you want a scent.
Personal Care
  • Foundation: Rejuva Minerals Loose Foundation – This foundation is blended with antioxidants from certified organic fruits and is free from toxic ingredients, common skin irritants, gluten and GMOs. It gives a light-medium coverage and doesn’t last as long as a conventional foundation, but the extremely clean ingredients (rated a 1 on the EWG Skin Deep database) makes it worth it to me.
  • Mascara: W3ll People Expressionist Mascara – I searched far and wide for a good all natural mascara and I finally found it! This actually stays on my lashes and gives them good pigment and length while still being 100% cruelty-free, petroleum-free, paraben free, gluten-free, coal tar-free, and aluminum-free. Still doesn’t work as well as conventional but the trade off is worth it to me.
  • Eye Pencil and Concealer NYX Wonder Pencil – This pencil surprisingly is rated a 1 on the EWG Skin Deep database. I use this as a concealer and to brighten my eyes along the water line.
  • Shampoo and Body Wash: Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap – Castile soap is a great natural and biodegradable soap with a multitude of uses from personal care to cleaning. In my household, we mainly use it for shampoo and diluted for hand cleanser and body wash.
  • Moisturizer: Jojoba Oil – Jojoba oil mimics the natural oils of our skin, so it absorbs quickly without a greasy residue. I use this to cleanse my face as well as an all over moisturizer. Jon also uses this on his beard and it makes it look so healthy and nourished!
  • Toothpaste: Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil and Neem – My toothpaste search is not over, but for now our family has settled on this, which overall is rated really well on the EWG Skin Deep database with a 2.
  • Deodorant: Tom’s of Maine Unscented – Sweating is a natural form of detoxification and if we trap those toxins inside with antiperspirants, the toxins have nowhere to go. Regular deodorants contain aluminum, parabens (both of which have been identified in most cancerous breast tissue) and other nasty toxins. I prefer to use the Tom’s non-toxic deodorant and work on preventing body odor from the inside out by eating a diet full of nutrient-dense, whole foods.
  • Feminine Products: Organyc Brand Organic Cotton Pads – I don’t use tampons, because I just don’t think that area is meant to be plugged! But once in a while when my Thinx period-proof underwear (see below) aren’t cutting it, I use these organic cotton pads to avoid putting nasty chemicals near my nether region.
  • Hair: Badger Hair Pomade – I personally don’t use any hair products for my hair, but Jon uses this for his hair and he loves it! He says a little goes a long way. It”s rated a 1 on the EWG Skin Deep database.
Clothing
  • Pact Organics – Cotton farming uses more pesticides than any other area of agricultural production. Pact offers organic cotton apparel for men, women, and children with no toxic dies or pesticides and reduces environmental impact. I have loved every item that I’ve purchased from them, but my favorite is their organic underwear. Click here for 20% off your first purchase!
  • Boody Eco Wear – I searched far and wide for a wire-free bra that kept my shape well, and I finally found it with Boody’s Padded Shaper Bra. I wear this as my everyday bra and love it! When I have to go back to my old underwire for a special occasion it is basically torture. Not only is underwire uncomfortable, but it also causes scar tissue and stagnant lymph in breast tissue.
  • Thinx Underwear – These period proof panties are the best thing ever and they come in organic cotton!
